Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.

Mark  9:37

Baptism is a wonderful ceremony where family, friends, godparents and church come together to claim the promises God makes regarding our children.

A child is not ‘made’ a Christian when baptised; that is for them to choose for themselves when they are older. At a child’s baptism God extends his covenant grace to them. As parents, you and godparents make specifically clear Christian statements and promises, and thus a child is baptised on the weight of your and their faith.

The Church of England website on Baptism/Christening offers a wealth of information. If you are thinking about having your child baptised or if you are a godparent or if you are attending a baptism service, it will help you to make informed choices throughout the process. It can be found at

At St Mary’s, we invite you and your godparents to an informal preparation meeting prior to the Baptism. We watch a DVD entitled ‘First Steps: A Parent’s Guide to Baptism’. The promises undertaken by parents and godparents are then explained as we take a detailed look at the baptism service. Baptisms are conducted on Sundays either at 12.15pm or during our service at 10am. At the end of the meeting a date for your baptism is agreed.

To begin the process of booking your child’s baptism, call  the church office on 01233 664820, you be invited to the next baptism preparation meeting at which you can book your child’s baptism.
